Algae as Building Blocks

Challenge

The challenge was to detect circular economy - and design potentials of algae as a future material resource, as well as to link the cultivation of algae to urban material streams. Algae have the capacity to clean water naturally from a broad range of pollutants, while they produce valuable biomass.

Process

The project was organized in the following steps:

  1. Cultivation of algae,
  2. Consultation of experts from the fields of architecture, bio-technology, biology and environmental sciences,
  3. Material studies,
  4. Prototype development in the Hafven maker space.

Results

The result of the project was a prototype-material for the construction industries developed from the algae. To exhibit the project's idea and outcome, an installation was built, displaying the process of growing algae and the material "algaecrete”.
